There seems to be barely a day goes past that one manufacturer or
another isn't announcing their next smartphone launch. And whilst not
all of these announcements are exciting enough to make us drool, there
are certainly several potential must-have devices due in the coming
days, weeks and months to make buying a smartphone an exciting prospect.
LG Nexus 5
Due literally any day now, the Nexus 5 seems all set to improve on the popularity of the Nexus 4 if the positive feedback from around the web is to be believed.
The Nexus 5 is almost certain to be the very
first phone to be running the new Android Kit Kat operating system, and
will boast a large 4.95in display, a quad-core SnapDragon 800 cpu running at 2.3GHz, and should see improvements in RAM, battery capacity and the LTE radio.
Whilst good, these aren't the most amazing set of specifications for a smartphone appearing at the end of 2013.

What makes this phone worth considering if you
are in the market for a new device is the price. Rumored to be available
for just $349 for the 16GB model, without the need for a 12-month call
plan, you would be hard pressed to find a better deal on a phone this
good. It also appears that the glass back which caused problems for some
uses (by inconsiderately breaking when dropped) has been given the
shove for a simpler, and hopefully more robust, curved back.
Nokia Lumia 1520
As a big fan of both the Lumia 920
and the 1020, the soon to be released Nokia Lumia 1520 is certainly an
exciting prospect for me. This is not only a powerful device with lots
of impressive features, it is also something of a new direction for
Nokia and Windows Phone 8.
The 1520 will one of two new phones from the
recently acquired company which features a huge 6-inch ClearBlack IPS
LCD display (the other device being the Lumia 1320).
On the 1520,
this will provide a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, and an impressive
367ppi. In the engine room, the 1520 will be boasting a very quick
2.2GHz SnapDragon 800 and 2GB of RAM, making this device the equal of
almost anything else on the market in terms of pure processing power.
However, the Lumia series built much of its
popularity on the quality of the camera rather than benchmark results,
and the 1520 looks set to continue that trend. The 20MP PureView
camera, equipped with Zeiss optics, image stabilization and all the
cool features first seen in the 1020 is sure to be a big hit with users
when this phone hits the stores later this year.
Sony Xperia Z1 S (or Z1 Mini)
Whilst
the rumors about this upcoming device are still fairly vague, it seems
that users worldwide can at least expect to see something like a mini Z1
in the next month or two. There has already been an announcement for a
smaller Z1 in Japan (the Z1 F), but that device seems to be somewhat
different in style to its big brother. The Z1 S looks set to include
almost all of the goodness of Sony's flagship device, but in a smaller,
more pocket-friendly size.
Expected to feature a powerful
SnapDragon 800 cpu, a superb 20.1 megapixel camera with a Sony G lens,
2BG or RAM and 32GB of internal storage, this certainly won't be a
watered-down version of the original phone like we have seen with the Galaxy S4 Mini
or HTC One Mini. So if the 5-inch Xperia Z1 is appealing but just a
little too big for you, you may want to wait for this 4.3-inch version
to hit a store near you.
LG G Flex
Following the
announcement recently by Samsung of a curved smartphone (the Samsung
Galaxy Round), LG has shown its hand in the curved screen skirmish by
announcing details of their upcoming G Flex device. The big difference,
however, is that the curve on the Flex is from top to bottom, rather
than across the width of the phone like the Round. LG has said that the
curve is designed to make the phone fit the face better, as well as
providing a more natural grip and viewing angle when watching movies or
playing games.
Along with the innovative six-inch HD P-OLED
display, the G Flex is set to feature a blisteringly fast 2.26GHz
SnapDragon 800 processor, a dedicated Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of Ram and
32GB of internal storage, a 13MP main camera and a powerful 3,500mAh
battery pack. How well either of these curved screen types works is yet
to be seen, but I for one am extremely interested to find out. Due for
release in Korea in November, the rest of the world may have to wait
until December or even early January to get their hands on the G Flex.
